7.30pm – St Mary’s Church HAYDN’S INNOVATIONS EVENING CONCERT THE ENGLISH HAYDN ORCHESTRA on period instruments Conductor STEVEN DEVINE Soloists: Pavel Serbin - violoncello Steven Devine - fortepiano Haydn: Symphony No 38 in C (1765/69) Tricklir: Cello Concerto No 6 in G (1783) Beethoven: Piano Concerto Opus 15 No 1 in C (1795) Haydn: Symphony No. 48 in C (1768/69) The innovation in scoring in symphony 38 expands upon an earlier common baroque practice of cadential phrase-repetition. H. C. Robbins Landon has described symphony 48 as a "great and indeed germinal work." It was one of the very few Haydn symphonies of this period to survive throughout the nineteenth century in various editions. Jean Balthasar Tricklir (1750 - 1813) was a French cellist and composer producing compositions much in Haydn's style. Born in Dijon, studied in Mannheim, he became court musician in Dresden in 1783 and remained there until his death. He was regarded as one of the finest violoncellists of his day.
